Save money on costly repairs by disconnecting your outdoor hoses NOW! Most newer homes have an outside hose bib mistakenly called a “freeze-proof” faucet. These faucets work by shutting off the water 8-12 inches back inside the house. The pipe that goes through the foundation drains itself of water when the faucet is turned off. If there is no water in the pipe (whose outer end is exposed to freezing temperatures), there’s no water to freeze and crack the pipe. Keeping a hose hooked up to the faucet, prevents the water from draining, and therefore is subject to freezing and cracking. SPECIAL NOTE: Anything on the hose bib can prevent the water from draining. Remove attachments such as watering timers, distribution T’s or Y’s for multiple hoses, or other things that screw directly to the outside faucet.
